How does the skill system work? [top]

Characters will have access to a huge variety of both class-specific skills (class skills) and general-use skills (secondary skills). Class skills are determined by your character class and are an integral part of your character. For example, a warrior's sword skill, axe skill, and mace skill are all considered class skills. There will also be a wide variety of secondary skills available, so players will be able to uniquely flavor their characters. Examples of secondary skills might include first aid, lock picking, riding, fishing, and herbalism, to name a few.
How do you improve your skills? [top]

Players will improve their characters' skills through a combination of usage and leveling. A character's level determines the maximum potential for any given skill, while actually using a particular skill determines the current proficiency in that skill.
Will players be able to create their own items using trade skills? [top]

World of Warcraft will feature a wide variety of trade skills giving players the ability to interact with the world and the opportunity to create numerous unique items. Announcements regarding specific trade skills will be released during the course of development.
Can you tell us more about the secondary skills? [top]

Secondary skills are learned from various trainers around the world. Some skills will be rare and hard to find trainers for, while others will be much more common, with trainers located in multiple cities.

Each level, players are granted skill points that they can use to purchase secondary skills from the wide assortment that will be available in the game. Some examples of secondary skills in World of Warcraft are: Engineering, with which a player can make different mechanical devices such as clockwork critters for scouting, and Herbalism, which allows a player to spot and gather various rare herbs.

Because players have a limited amount of points to spend, they will generally specialize in only a few secondary skills. This encourages them to seek out other players who have skills that they don't have.

Will there be skill trees? [top]

Nope, no skill trees... Instead, spread across the world will be various skill trainers. Many skills will have prerequisite skills or minimum levels, but there is no skill tree as such.
How do players acquire new trade-skill recipes? [top]

Trade-skill recipes are the blueprints for crafting an item, and they detail the raw components required to manufacture that item. Many recipes are available from the same in-game trainers who teach a specific trade skill. Other recipes are found through various vendors around the world or on the corpses of slain monsters.
How do trade skills work? [top]

There are two types of skills in World of Warcraft: gathering skills, which allow you to collect the raw materials needed to make items, and trade skills, which actually transform those materials into finished goods. Trade skills are generally paired with gathering skills in a relationship that makes each integral to the other. To make items with the blacksmithing ability, for example, players will need ingredients that are acquired by applying the mining skill. Players will not have to be equipped with both paired abilities to succeed, however. An alchemist working to create a potion can always purchase the necessary herbs from an herbalist.
How are trade skills in World of Warcraft different from those in other MMORPGs? [top]

A great deal of effort has been made to make every item that is crafted useful so that players are not just creating items to increase their skills. Also, many of the raw materials needed will be found in dangerous locations throughout the world. Players are encouraged to adventure in order to gain ingredients - rather than just farm a distant, nondescript patch of land endlessly. Recipes will work every time. If you collect the proper ingredients to create an item, you don't have to worry about them being wasted due to failures. There's also no need to constantly experiment in World of Warcraft to find a combination of ingredients that will work. A recipe clearly lists what what it will allow you to create and what raw materials are required. There's no guesswork (or surfing through dozens of Web sites) involved...
can a hunters beast be killed if so what happens can it be resurected / healed etc [top]

Well, we know that hunters can only tame one beast at a time. It makes sense for them to be killable, just like any creature could be. So far, I believe Blizzard has been unclear on what happens regarding pets that are killed. We will try to find out more information on this question.
