What classes will be available in World of Warcraft? [top]

The World of Warcraft will include Warriors, Mages, Druids, Hunters, Warlocks, Priests, Paladins, Rogues, and Shamans. Visit the Classes page.
How many characters are allowed per account? [top]

Currently, the number is 8, but that number is subject to change.
Can you tell us more about what options are customizable on your character when you create it? [top]

We don't want to overwhelm players with too many choices when they start off. That's why we are concentrating on features that players will notice right away. This will include things like hair style, hair color, skin color, and facial features. Players will of course also get to select their race, gender, and class. The remaining elements of character customization will be done in-game, when players have a better understanding of how the choices they're making will affect their characters.
Will characters require food and water to survive? [top]

A character will never be required to eat or drink. Nor will there be negative consequences for not consuming food and water. While the specifics have not been determined, there will be benefits associated with eating and drinking.
Will characters be able to swim? [top]

Characters will be able to swim, and World of Warcraft will have underwater environments to explore.
Will characters age? [top]

Characters will not get older as they progress in the game.
Will a character's gender have any effect on its stats? [top]

No. Males and females will be equally effective in all areas of the game.
What classes will be offered? [top]

We will make announcements regarding character classes throughout the course of development.
Will the classes be based on Warcraft units? [top]

Some of the classes in the game will be similar to units found in the Warcraft series. Certain additional classes will also be included that are unique to World of Warcraft.
Will you have a skill-based or level-based system? [top]

Our goal is to incorporate the best elements of both skill-based and level-based systems. This means that players will be able to gain levels and gain abilities based on their class as they level up through the game. Players will also be able to acquire additional skills through other gameplay methods such as seeking mentors or by completing quests. These extra skills may not always be related to the player's class.
How do spells work? [top]

All of the character classes in World of Warcraft have access to spells and/or special abilities. As a character levels, they can purchase, train, research, or simply find new spells and add them to their spell book and/or ability book. Casting spells and using special abilities generally requires mana and may sometimes require one or more reagents.
Will there be emotes such as waving, bowing, etc? [top]

We expect to have a full spectrum of role-playing emotes within the game.
Will there be "crowd control" spells like sleep, confuse, mesmerize, etc.? [top]

Yes. In addition to crowd-control spells such as these, there will be a wide assortment of other spells and abilities that will vary the tactics players use to defeat monsters. Some examples are Call Lightning, Fear, and Dominate. Remember, though, that the monsters will have access to these too... =)
What are the character attributes? [top]

Strength - Improves weapon damage and slight improvement to blocking and critical damage.
Agility - Improves chances to dodge and proc (changes that a weapons imbued ability such as poison will successfully execute)
Stamina - Improves hit points
Intellect - Increases spell damage and healing (how much you heal when you perform a healing spell)
Spirit - Increases mana regeneration

The base levels of these statistics are different between all classes but not genders and they are increased with skill points you choose to assign when leveling up. How many points awarded with each level-up has yet to be set. Items will also increase these attributes. Resistances consist of Holy, Fire, Nature, Frost, Shadow.

Will characters in World of Warcraft have alignments (good, neutral, evil, etc.)? [top]

Traditionally in RPGs, a character?s alignment helps determine how NPCs react to that character. Currently in World of Warcraft, the way that this sort of interaction will be affected is through the character?s faction and reputation. World of Warcraft?s factions are the Horde (comprised of the Orcs, Tauren, Undead, and Trolls), and the Alliance (made up of Humans, Dwarves, Night Elves, and Gnomes). In keeping with the history established in the previous Warcraft games, there is an uneasiness between these two sides that permeates the atmosphere of the world. Non-player characters - such as quest givers and vendors - will respond accordingly. The reputation system is still being tweaked, but the basic idea is that a character?s reputation can change throughout the course of the game as he or she performs actions that one group of NPCs or monsters might value highly but that another might despise. Some things that a character?s reputation will help decide are whether certain quests are accessible and whether or not certain non-faction groups will attack on sight.
Will there be in World of Warcraft stuff like a social level? Which will affect the way other players or/and some game characters see you? [top]

There will definitely be factions within the game, although we are not certain what Blizzard has planned beyond the basic knowledge that there are factions. We are think some factions will not like you but you will be able to gain their trust.
How long can your name be and will last names be available? [top]

Currently, all names are restricted to 12 characters. We are planning on implementing last names, however, the criteria for obtaining one has not been determined.
How do Warlock players fit into the two factions? After all, a Warlock's powers do come from the Burning Legion, right? [top]

Warlocks are at this time at peace with the other members of their faction. After all, they're only fighting fire with fire, and remain faithful to their allies.
What is the level limit? [top]

The current character level limit is 60. This is subject to change in the beta.
